From one of us to another

From one progressive to another, I will never again support Tim Canova.

I worked for a short time for Tim Canova as a staffer during his primary in 2016. I joined his race thinking I’d landed a job working with the next great progressive advocate. That a team of people who wanted to make our community a more equitable place would welcome me. Unfortunately, I was sorely mistaken.

From the day I joined the campaign, there was no doubt in my mind that something was amiss. That the Tim Canova I was interacting with and the Tim Canova being projected to the progressive community, were far from the same.

He led a workplace environment that was aggressively hostile to female staffers. It is no coincidence that aside from a grossly overpaid consulting team he kept on the payroll, he neither employed female senior staffers, nor, over the course of the campaign, as he promoted young male staffers into senior positions, did he promote a single female staffer to senior leadership.

No self described progressive should pay women as little relative to their male counterparts, and no member of our movement should support anyone who does.

At Tim’s direction, campaign staff made suggestive, and inappropriate comments to female staffers about personal relationships. Both Tim and other male senior staff would frequently make sexist comments towards their own female staffers, and towards our opponent, Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Leadership starts at the top, and Tim never had the backs of the staffers who shared their concerns about his sexist workplace, and attitudes towards women. Neutrality in the wake of oppression is alignment.

Because Tim wasn’t interested in promoting a progressive movement or in supporting the people who put their trust in him, he was interested in promoting his own ego. That’s all any of this was about.

He spent millions of dollars, not to try to help people or make the world better, but to try and settle a grudge against a woman he felt never showed him respect. All while listening to a group of consultants, who did not support our progressive movement. That money was wasted. Money donated by the hard working members of our movement.

I can’t support that. And neither should you.
