AHOY! BRING DOWN THE ROYAL CAKE!

Dec 25, 2016

The cheer of Christmas will begin to subdue in a matter of hours. The crib and tree would be taken down by New Year and would stay boxed away for a year. But there’s something that’ll linger the households still weeks later. Yes, the fruitcakes aka plum cakes. I’ll admit that the Christmas cakes aren’t so fancy and fab after few pieces. But then the very first piece every Christmas is patently something to savour. It’s true that even the artificial tang of rich plum and brandy from the gifted cakes will haunt your home for days and the later boxes to arrive before Christmas will get turned into beloved re-gifts – well aware that the confection wouldn’t be more relished by any receiver. But however I hate it, there’s this sure longing, few weeks after the last piece has been done with – to taste that rich blend again another Christmas a year later.

Given the facts, it’d then be quite amusing to know that Queen Victoria allegedly waited an entire year to taste a piece of fruitcake she received as a birthday gift – not because she too hated it, but an effort to show her restraint for the adorable fruitcake! The British Royalty has had a long-followed tradition with fruitcakes – served as wedding cakes in pomp. From the single-layered leaden plum cake served on Queen Victoria’s wedding, the fruitcakes have continued to make its presence in the Royal weddings, getting better in looks and taste progressively through three-tiers and four-tiers (King George V’s wedding cake had four tiers separated by columns and statues) and five-tiers to Kate and Will’s wedding cake of eight tiers (the top tier preserved for Prince George’s christening)! All these historic cakes have been preserved and auctioned at bizarre bids. Funny how the Royal family preserves the cakes for as long as quarter centuries when typical households go about re-gifting them ASAP!

Merry Christmas! Allow me to wash down a piece of plum cake I’m presently feasting on with some wine.
