Land Of Migrants

(Poem)

Your deserved praises they sing from the yards
Their eloquence swiftly raising the bright flag
On you, chest up, into classrooms they march
But it’s only a matter of time
Before they feel wise, and from you try to fly

Some try to swim, too
And then walk, and hide, and run through
Never sure to make it to the next moon
Days and miles in agony. In sight, not a single roof
They will do anything, go anywhere, but back to you

Coming back to you is the plan, others say
But one to which they never put a date
Perhaps because they now have three meals a day
You know in Egypt they get fish and onions without pay
And they’ve heard about Israel, her sons and regrets

Sons of yours attempt however
Their needy people welcome them bush-fallers
The rigged system tags them double-gamers
Under the table, interviewers ask them to speak better
So they either play the game or leave you forever

Your ever pregnant light now shining so dim
Lets your peers dazzle away your finest into dreams
Of those who stay, only a few can stand still
Once home, now mere land of normal anomalies
They clown on your price while yet hoping to witness your spring

Even their eldest, hanging onto the head place
Only wish you well from far away
They come around and you think they’ll stay
But tomorrow is another day
Tired or unable to lead your people, they lead the way

All bred, fed and grown on your soil
To you they owe it all
But ever trying to stand tall
They brave foreign lands, struggling to live from a daily toil
And return to you at dusk, rotting in six walls
