Machine Learning as I see it

It has been quite a while now that Machine Learning(ML) has been a regular talk in the software fraternity. For some, it is a new and an unknown area and it excites them to talk about it. While many non-tech savvy people deem it as yet another hype in the software world, many others have already dived into the realm of ML and Artificial Intelligence(AI) with a multitude of applications using these technologies.

I, myself (no Irene!), am an established Software Engineer with over 20 years of programming experience and find ML as a fascinating subject to delve in. I am not a fan of Statistics but the interest in learning ML forced me to learn it and eventually the subject became interesting. I am not regretting it now. The dreaded probability theory seemed very interesting while learning the techniques required to understand ML.

Initially, there was some apprehension in starting to learn ML with some of the colleagues discouraging it, stating that it was for the Math wizards and statistically inclined and not for Engineers like us. I knew that perspective was wrong and that was confirmed when I actually started learning ML a few months ago by joining an online course. Of course, I had started going through ML courses and other write-ups on the internet about ML multiple times before too, but after joining the course and going through the required topics methodically, it made more sense and I could appreciate the need for learning Statistics as a pre-requisite to learning ML.

An objective approach to learning ML is very essential. Developing various models using the existing algorithms will take us through the ML journey faster and allow us time to appreciate the modeling techniques and the algorithms used. Machine Learning is a vast subject with a lot to learn, uncover and also innovate in this area.

Personally, I have a lot to contribute to this area of Machine Learning and AI. It is a long journey that I look forward to covering applying the technique in my field of work i.e., Software Engineering.
