Open up a new level of audio mangling in Reaper.

Reaper is almost infinitely adaptable. Routing tracks can be as complex or a simple as you like, just like in a real studio. And just like in a real studio you can create feedback loops.

The first thing you’ll need to do is go into project settings and click ‘Allow feedback in routing’.

Now you’ll need to set up a feedback loop, if you’ve ever used a delay effect with a feedback control you should have some idea on this.

Here’s a very simple effects loop set up:

A few things to note: firstly it’s important that you have your delay effect set completely to wet, that is no dry signal coming through at all. If you do leave dry leaking through you’ll know soon enough when your speakers cut out.

Likewise, make sore feedback is set to zero, you don’t want the delay recirculating the signal without it first going through other effects.

In a later article I’ll cover how you can integrate this technique to use dub style echo patterns as well as Brian Eno style Frippertronics set ups.
