Itinerary summary:

Over the course of seven days you will experience the serenity inside Europe’s second-largest glacier, cruise to puffin-inhabited islands, trek through the countryside on horseback, and feel miniature at mammoth waterfalls. With private guides uncovering everything from ancient lava tracks to the hiding place of elves and gnomes, every experience is unique and exhilarating. And with a perfect combination of outdoor activities and exclusive cultural insights, this trip truly uncovers the best of North Iceland.

Day 1. Local farm & food experience in Hvalfjörður fjord, Barnafoss waterfalls and riveting glacier jeep adventure

Upon arrival at Keflavik airport, you will be greeted by your private English-speaking driver-guide. Your first stop is the beautiful Hvalfjörður fjord (so deep that US warships were hidden here during WWII), where an Icelandic family reveals the intricate workings of their farm which has been in the family since 1887. Amongst the hubbub of the family home, relish homemade farm delicacies as you gaze out across the fjord — a view only sweetened by home-brewed dandelion wine and other traditional Icelandic treats. En-route to Langjökull, Europe’s second largest glacier, stand in awe at the Barnafoss waterfalls, where sparkling white crests cascade into a pool of emerald-blue. Then buckle-up as an expert 8-wheel truck driver navigates the ice-cap’s immense crevasses and delivers you to the entrance of a gravity-defying tunnel of glistening blue ice-walls at Langjökull glacier. As you warm-up again in your luxury, private vehicle, enjoy a scenic drive to Iceland’s western highlands, where you will spend your first evening.

Hotel Husafell is a modern, luxury retreat amidst natural wonders, completely surrounded by rolling hills and rugged mountains, and lush greenery. With endless outdoor activities or rejuvenating treats, Hótel Húsafell offers the ultimate in Icelandic comfort. Incredibly, it also produces 100% of the energy it uses.

Day 2. Gianni waterfall, river rafting excursion, exclusive wool factory tour, and transfer to the countryside

Indulge in some morning magic at Glanni waterfall, said to be home to elves and gnomes for centuries, where magnificent torrents of crystal-white plunge into the icy-blue waters of Norðurá river. Then, embark on a thrilling rafting trip down the West Glacial River before savoring a delicious riverside BBQ. Featuring steaming riverside hot springs and magnificent canyon landscapes, this gentle rafting tour offers everyone from the novice rafter to the whole family an opportunity to pick up a paddle and explore Iceland’s stunning river wilderness.

Afterwards, enjoy a unique behind-the-scenes tour of a wool factory, where you can appreciate the warm, fluffy fleece of Icelandic sheep being washed, brushed and spun into beautiful garments. The adjoining shop is perfect for buying your iconic Nordic jumper. Now suitably attired, it’s time to head to Hvítserkur, a fifteen-metre high monolith, the center of many myths and fables, but be it a petrified ancient creature or not, the unfathomable rock formation is nothing less than awe-striking. Further along the peninsula is Borgarvirki, a spectacular columnar basalt and volcanic plug that was allegedly a Viking fortress. You will then be transferred to your hotel on the outskirts of Laugarbakki village.

Surrounded by lush greenery and endless landscapes, with a salmon river a short walk away, Hotel Laugarbakki is perfect for enjoying peace and tranquillity, especially from the outdoor hot tubs.

Day 3. Drangey island, Prophecies Museum and visit to a fish leather tannery

Start the day with a cruise across Skagafjörður fjord to Drangey island, the remnant of a 700,000-year-old-volcano. At 180 metres above sea-level, the sheer sided palagonite rock is a breath-taking display of nature’s intricacies. Spend time traversing the crags and mingling with the resident puffins, guillemots and shearwaters before pausing to absorb the summer views across the entire fjord. Round off your day meeting Pordis the fortune-teller who was the first named inhabitant of Skagaströnd dating all the way back to the 10th Century. Examine her treasure chest and wares then stop for a little fortune reading. Next is a private tour through Sauðárkrókur Tannery, the only tannery in Europe that makes quality fish leather.

Situated in Iceland’s northernmost town, Siglufjörður, Sigló Hótel is built directly on the marina with a spectacular mountain backdrop. With modern, cozy rooms, an outdoor pool and a choice of three restaurants, Sigló is idyllic for gazing out across the marina and enjoying the tranquillity.

Day 4. Akureyri city tour, the Christmas Garden, Goðafoss waterfall and North Iceland’s geothermal wonders

Stroll the streets of Akureyri, the ‘capital of North Iceland’ and discover the Art Alley, bars, cafes, theaters, and more. Afterwards, head through the doors of a quaint little gingerbread house and emerge into the world of Christmas, with handmade decorations, traditional Christmas food and a crackling fire. Next you will be taken to Goðafoss waterfall, an immense semi-circle of powering white falls, followed by a stop at Skútustaðir, a chain of volcanic craters that formed around 2300 years ago. You will then explore Krafla Mountain, which houses a power station that relies solely on geothermal steam, and look into the inferno, otherwise called Viti, a bafflingly huge explosive crater in the slopes of Krafla. Further along the road, your driver will stop at the hidden Hverir, a unique wasteland of pools of boiling, bubbling mud — walking around the sizzling geothermal site is surely akin to walking on Mars. Inhaling the sulphuric smell may not be appealing but it is the world’s best natural nebulizer. Next is the ethereal Grjótagjá lava cave, where steam from the hot spring rises mystically across the aqua blue water.

The newly opened Fosshotel Mývatn is a sleekly designed eco hotel, with larch-wood walls and grass roofs. Enjoy dinner overlooking the lake or indulge in a suite with private outdoor hot tubs.

Day 5. Dimmuborgir lava fields, Dettifoss waterfall, glacial canyon and whale-watching safari and overnight in the striking Akureyri

Continuing the exploration of Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, today’s tour starts at Dimmuborgir, a large area of dramatically shaped lava fields and various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel. Then, head to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, where you will be spell-bound by the phenomena that is Iceland’s natural wonders. After the roar of water, enjoy the tranquillity of Ásbyrgi or ‘Shelter of the Gods’, an impressive glacial horseshoe shaped canyon that’s steeped in folklore mystery. Then cruise from Husavik harbour to the open ocean to watch whales in their natural habitat, effortlessly moving through depths of blue water, leaving a crisp, salty spray behind.

Located in the very heart of Akureyri, Hotel Kea’s crisp, comfortable rooms are the perfect pit-stop for those exploring North Iceland. Make the most of the outside terrace with views to the striking Akureyri church and beyond.

Day 6. Return to Reykjavik and embark on a horseback riding excursion with home-cooked lunch

After rejuvenating, it’s time to fly back to Reykjavik for a farm visit and horseback riding adventure in the outskirts of the city. Local farmers will introduce their superb ‘five-gaited’ horses and discuss training methods before you head far off the beaten track on a horseback riding adventure. After working up an appetite, the farmers will welcome you to share a home-cooked meal with plenty of time for stories and local chatter.

The Canopy by Hilton is a modern masterpiece, chicly designed to the last detail. With luxurious, on-trend rooms and an enviable city center location, it is everything the discerning traveler needs in a hotel. And with its own dry-aging room, it is undeniably serving up some of the tastiest, tenderest meat in Reykjavík.
